The Qantas Super Board consists of five directors who are nominated and elected by our members, and five directors who are appointed by Qantas Airways Ltd. The member-elected directors are elected by the members in accordance with the Rules for the Nomination, Appointment and Removal of Directors.

Record of attendance

The Qantas Super Board schedules at least four formal meetings and a strategy session each year, but meets more frequently if required. We keep a seven year record of attendance at board meetings.

Company-appointed Directors

John Atkin: Chair

John was appointed to the Qantas Super Board on 7 March 2019. John is currently a non-executive director of IPH Ltd, Integral Diagnostics Ltd (both ASX listed) and of the Commonwealth Bank Officers Superannuation Corporation. He is also the Chair of the Australian Institute of Company Directors (AICD), and Chair of Outward Bound Australia.

Before his non-executive director career, John was most recently the CEO of The Trust Company, where he successfully steered the organisation through the GFC. Prior to this he spent six years as the National Managing Partner of Blake Dawson (now Ashurst) and 15 years as a Partner at Mallesons Stephen Jaques (now King & Wood Mallesons).

John holds a Bachelor of Laws with 1st Class Honours from the University of Sydney and a Bachelor of Arts with 1st Class Honours in Pure Mathematics from the Australian National University.

Cecilia Ho

Investment Committee | Audit and Risk Committee | Insurance Committee

Cecilia joined Qantas in 2007 and was appointed to the Qantas Super Board on 28 January 2015. She has over 15 years’ experience in Treasury-related roles.

Cecilia is currently Treasurer Risk Management of Qantas Airways Limited and, as such, is responsible for the financial risk management for Qantas Group. This includes management of the A$4bn-plus p.a. exposure to jet fuels price risk, foreign currency risk including Qantas Airway’s committed capital expenditure program and its operating revenues earned in more than 80 countries, interest rate risk on the Qantas A$5bn of balance sheet debt and A$2bn of off-balance sheet operating leases, as well as a cash balance and liquidity of more than A$2bn.

Prior to joining Qantas, Cecilia was Treasury Dealer for Western Power. Cecilia holds a Bachelor of Commerce, Bachelor of Science, Graduate Diploma of Applied Finance and Investment, and Master of Business Administration.

Lorraine Berends

Insurance Committee | Investment Committee (Chair) | Member Experience Committee

Lorraine was appointed to the Board on 31 May 2019.

Lorraine is an actuary and investment specialist with over 35 years of experience. In addition to executive roles at National Mutual and Marvin & Palmer Associates, Lorraine has served on the boards of the Association of Superannuation Funds of Australia and the Investment Management Consultants Association (now the CIMA Society of Australia).

She is currently a non-executive director on a range of boards including Pinnacle Investment Management Group Limited and the MDC Foundation Limited and has been a member of BT’s Superannuation Board and QSuper’s Investment Committee.

Andrew Monaghan

Audit and Risk Committee (Chair) | Nominations Committee | Remuneration Committee (Chair)

Andrew Monaghan joined Qantas in 2005 and was appointed to the Qantas Super Board on 26 November 2014. He is the Chief Operating Officer, QantasLink, and Executive Manager Aviation Services.

Andrew started at Qantas in the role of Airport Manager and has held several positions across the Group in portfolio areas including strategy, operations, services, transformation, property, HR, finance, audit, risk, and safety.

Prior to joining Qantas, Andrew held a range of senior roles with Lincoln Electric, including serving as a Director of the Trustee of the Lincoln Electric Superannuation Plan. Andrew holds a Bachelor of Engineering.

Rachel Yangoyan

Member Experience Committee (Chair) | Audit and Risk Committee

Rachel joined Qantas in 2003 and was appointed to the Qantas Super Board effective 10 November 2016. She is currently the Executive Manager Customer Experience & Operations. She was previously Chief Operating Officer, Qantas Australian Airports, and Executive Manager Loyalty Services.

Trained as a Chartered Accountant, Rachel commenced her career at Ernst and Young in audit and first joined Qantas in 2003 in the internal audit department. Rachel has held a range of positions throughout her time at Qantas including strategy, transformation, revenue management, customer segmentation, operations and general management.

Rachel holds a Bachelor of Business and is a qualified Chartered Accountant.

Member-elected Directors

Mark Thorpe: Group A

Insurance Committee | Investment Committee

Mark was elected to the Qantas Super Board on 12 June 2008. He is a First Officer on the Airbus 330 and has been a pilot with Qantas since 1999. Prior to becoming a pilot, Mark was an Actuary and worked with Towers Perrin as a superannuation consultant. He has more than 20 years’ experience in various roles in the superannuation industry.

Mark holds a Bachelor of Economics, is a Fellow of the Institute of Actuaries of Australia, and is a Fellow of the Australian Institute of Company Directors.

Mark’s final term and total tenure was extended for an additional 12 months by the Board on 28 May 2020, and his term is now to expire on 12 June 2021.

Bruce Roberts: Group B

Member Experience Committee | Insurance Committee (Chair) | Nominations Committee

Bruce was elected to the Board on 30 September 2016. He’s been a flight attendant with Qantas Airways Ltd since 1995, and is now a Customer Service Manager in international.

Bruce was elected Vice President of the Flight Attendants Association of Australia – International in 2016. He’s also an in-shift supervisor for the Lifeline phone room and a human services worker for Wesley Mission child and youth services. Previously he volunteered as a telephone counsellor with Lifeline Melbourne.

Bruce holds a Bachelor of Psychology (Honours) through Charles Sturt University, and an Associate Diploma of Business through RMIT.

Ryan Greaves: Group C

Investment Committee | Member Experience Committee

Ryan was elected to the Qantas Super Board by Group C members on 13 September 2019. He is aircraft maintenance engineer with Qantas based in Brisbane, Hangar Three.

Ryan is currently studying a Bachelor of Commerce, majoring in both Finance and Economics, and is specialising in the areas of investment analysis, equity valuation, portfolio management, and macroeconomics.

Luke Murray: Group D

Member Experience Committee | Audit and Risk Committee | Investment Committee

Luke was elected by Group D Members on 20 October 2017 and appointed as a Director on 4 December 2017. He’s a Licensed Aircraft Maintenance Engineer based in Brisbane and has been with Qantas since 1987. Luke is the current Assistant Federal Secretary for the Australian Licensed Aircraft Engineers Association (ALAEA).

Luke holds a Bachelor of Business (Accountancy) with Distinction from Queensland University of Technology and a Master of Commerce in Financial Planning from Griffith University.

Maria Cheung: Group E

Remuneration Committee

Maria was elected to the Qantas Super Board by Group E members on 27 February 2020, and appointed to the Board 12 March 2020.  Maria is the Head of Service Delivery and Operations for Qantas Loyalty, a role she has held since 2015. Maria’s career with the Qantas Group spans over 30 years.

Maria holds a Master of Business Administration from the Macquarie Graduate School of Management and a qualification in Project Management from the Australian College of Project Management. She has also completed training in the Lean Sigma Management Program and completed a Senior Management Development Program provided in house by Qantas in conjunction with the University of Technology, Sydney.

Michael Clancy

Chief Executive Officer

Michael Clancy joined Qantas Super as Chief Executive Officer in November 2015.

Michael has more than 25 years’ experience in the financial services industry, and is a specialist in the superannuation, investment, and insurance sectors. He is a Director on the Board of the Association of Superannuation Funds Australia (ASFA), representing the Corporate Super sector. He is also a Co-Founder and Director of the cloud-based digital wealth development, education & advice service, BigFuture.

Prior to joining Qantas Super, Michael spent more than 15 years at the NAB in leadership roles in the Asset Management and Investment Platforms businesses. His key achievements included driving significant innovations such as nabtrade, MLC Wrap, and the MLC MasterKey Investment Protection product.

Michael is currently a Director on the Board of Anglicare in Sydney, where he is the Chair of the Finance and Investment Committee. He has previously served as an Executive Director and Non-Executive Director on various Boards, including the Superannuation Trustee Boards of the NAB, WealthHub Securities Limited, Plum Financial Services Limited, National Corporate Investment Services Limited, and the CFA Society of Sydney.

Michael holds a Bachelor’s degree in Finance and Economics from the University of Technology, Sydney, and is a Chartered Financial Analyst. He is a member of the Australian Institute of Company Directors, and the CFA Institute.

Andrew Spence

Chief Investment Officer

Andrew was appointed as the inaugural Chief Investment Officer of Qantas Superannuation Limited on 28 July 2008. In this role Andrew is directly responsible for investment governance, objectives, strategy and risk, portfolio construction, manager selection within the agreed delegations matrix, investment implementation and liquidity management.

Prior to joining Qantas Super, Andrew had 23 years’ experience in all aspects of professional money management with leadership roles in investment management and investment consulting. This included 20 years of hands-on portfolio management experience in both Australia and the UK including being sole portfolio manager for MLC’s high conviction, growth strategy with responsibility for over $1.5 billion in assets split between approximately 20 stocks.

Andrew also spent three years at investment consultant Towers Watson with responsibility for key superannuation client relationships, strategic and people management across the investment consulting team, as well as being a decision-making member of the Australian equities manager research team.

Andrew is an independent member of The University of Sydney’s Investment and Commercialisation Committee which he joined in August 2010, as well as a member of the Australian Institute of Company Directors.

Educated at the University of East Anglia, Norwich, UK, Andrew holds a Bachelor of Science (Honours) in Accounting and Finance. Andrew completed Cornell University’s High Performance Leadership certificate in June 2016 and was recently awarded the prestigious 2017 London School of Economics Executive Education Scholarship.

Suzette Thurman

Chief Risk Officer

Suzette joined Qantas Superannuation Limited in December 2019 as our Chief Risk Officer. In this role, Suzette is responsible for overseeing for the provision of risk management and compliance services for Qantas Super.

Suzette has over 25 years’ experience in the superannuation sector, specialising in risk management, compliance, operations and project management. Prior to joining us, Suzette worked at First State Super for over 13 years in various risk and compliance related roles, most recently as Group Executive, Risk and Compliance. Suzette also spent time at APRA, where she worked for three and a half years as a Principal Analyst in one of its frontline supervisory teams.

Suzette holds a Bachelor of Commerce from the University of Wollongong and a Certificate in Governance and Risk Management from the Governance Institute of Australia. In 2016, she also completed a course in Risk Management through the Harvard Business School Executive Education program. Suzette also served on the Board of the Australian Institute of Superannuation Trustees from April 2017 to December 2019.

Outsourced service providers

There are other companies which help Qantas Super achieve its objectives. These are known as outsourced service providers.

  • Mercer Outsourcing (Australia) Pty Ltd provides our administration services. This means they manage our member data, transaction processing and call centre.
  • Qantas Super also uses a global custodian to hold our assets and investment managers to invest our assets.
